Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn), a young royal on a European tour, rebels against her rigid schedule and escapes into Rome. Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), an American reporter, finds her asleep on a bench and offers help. When he realises who she is, he considers exploiting the story, but instead they spend a day exploring Rome together — riding a Vespa, visiting the Spanish Steps, and falling in love.
In the end, Ann chooses duty over romance, returning to her royal life with dignity, making the film a classic bittersweet romance.
